Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual assistance. The services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include attendance policies, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, Residents’ rights, and exploitation of a resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , assisting with an Epi pen, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and whether family supports are available.
