Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, support, and care to medically stable persons who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer care supervision, assistance with the activities of daily life, and chances for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or nursing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, and described as personal services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and whether family supports are available. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: general infection control principles, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, attendance policies, and Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, assisting with an Epi pen, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand.
