Assisted living communities often provide assistance with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and chances for social activity. In some instances, communities may offer dementia care, continuing care, or respite. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. These areas include assisted living philosophy, applicable regulations, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, and aides must pass a competency exam. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, and plan must include types and frequency of services needed. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include delegation of supervision of self-administered medications, health promotion, resident teaching, and disease prevention. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take medications, verifying, and opening medication packages.
