Assisted living communities offer personal care, social events, and oversight to individuals around 65 years old. The types of service provided often include support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, hospice, or respite. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing certifies this community type. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include 10-hour orientation, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, assisted living philosophy, and aides must pass a competency exam. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, wellness counseling, resident teaching, and delegation of supervision of self-administered medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , verifying, and opening medication packages. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, and RN conducts consultation with the resident. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
