A welcoming community

The communication with the staff is great. When my dad first moved there, the staff took the time to talk to me regularly and quickly got to my dad and his personality. The went out of their way and put effort into finding my dad suitable dining table mates with similar interests. These men quickly became his close friends. During COVID, the community have sent daily updates by email. The main reason we chose Sunrise is because my dad requires a ground diet and they were able to accommodate this need. He actually says the food tastes great and has gained weight. Also, the staff really respect the resident's privacy.

Bait & Switch

Sunrise should not have a license to call itself a “Memory Care Facility”. Two days after moving my mom in, we received a call that she tried to leave the secure area and we would have to arrange for separate care in the form of an aid that would cost over $5,000 a month (in addition to the almost $10,000 they charged to provide a “safe and secure place”). This is a very common symptom of a memory care resident and not once during the interview process did they say this would be needed. In fact, when I explained my mom would likely do this behavior, I was told all about their secure facility and alarms on the doors, etc. They were happy to take her $5,700 one time (non refundable) move in fee, but are unable to staff the facility properly to provide the basic care a memory facility is expected to provide. Rather than hire one hourly wage employee to monitor the door, they require multiple residents to pay thousands of dollars a month to ensure they don’t leave? They sent me an eviction notice after deciding they were too incapable (or lazy) to actually do the job they promised to do when took all her money. So to be clear...THIS IS NOT A MEMORY CARE FACILITY. Management ([names removed]) are disgusting human beings who exist to only take advantage of your vulnerable, elderly loved ones. Stay far away from Sunrise East Setauket.

Beautiful but need better diet and exercise

Sunrise of East Setauket is beautiful, with calming neutral colors and large windows, allowing lots of natural light inside. The staff is personable and friendly. I wish they offered more trips out into the community; they offer very few. We also have had a hard time getting them to stop giving our mother too much sugar, which is detrimental to someone with Alzheimer’s. There is sugar water and dessert with every lunch and dinner. There also isn’t enough exercise. Our mother loves to walk, but they have her sitting for hours throughout the day. The only walks she gets are when we visit. There is a paved path around the building, and plenty of indoor walking space. But she is safe there and settling in, for the most part. Overall, it’s a nice place, worth considering as an option.

A nice tour

This is a nice looking larger community. This community seems to offer some nice activities and amenities such as monthly wellness visits by a licensed on-staff nurse. This community would not accept our loved one.

Oversold

Review limitations: My expectations might have been too high. I think Sunrise was oversold to me. That said... Food is very good. The entire facility is kept very clean and looks good. Care is not nearly individualized enough. Doctors on staff appear to be okay, but they are kind of passive. They offer lots of activities, but participation is small in number. Administration is a bit unorganized. The aides are okay. Expensive.

Sunrise of East Setauket

My mother loves it and is doing very well at Sunrise of East Setauket . They take very good care of my mother. Any time she does not feel like going down to eat, they will take the meal to her in her room. They are very accommodating like that and in many other ways. It is very clean and well kept, and the people there are Sunrise of East Setauket.
