Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individual help. The types of service provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain situations, communities may offer respite, hospice, or skilled nursing. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying, reminding residents to take medications, and assistance with self-administration of medications. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, and medications, treatments, and other required nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include wellness counseling, delegation of supervision of self-administered medications, health promotion, and resident teaching. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include assisted living philosophy, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, 10-hour orientation, and aides must pass a competency exam.
