An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, assistance, and support to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer opportunities for organized activity, assistance with appointments and transportation, and help with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or dementia care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $13,916 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $12,699 . The state of Connecticut has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, RN conducts consultation with the resident, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, and plan must include types and frequency of services needed. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, disease prevention, assistance with self-administered medications, and assistance with ADLs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include aides must pass a competency exam, applicable regulations, community policies and procedures, and 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying, reminding residents to take medications, and assistance with self-administration of medications.
