Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, supervision, and personal care to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, outings for social activity, and aid with appointments and transit. In some situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or continuing care. In Connecticut, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $58,560 . The state of Connecticut has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , reminding residents to take medications, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include disease prevention, medication administration, provision of care and services to residents whose conditions are chronic and stable, and wellness counseling. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: assisted living philosophy, community policies and procedures, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, and 10-hour orientation.
