Glastonbury sits upon the banks of the Connecticut River and prides itself on having acres of riverfront parks. More importantly, Glastonbury is rich with history – as the town with the second-highest number of genuine Colonial houses in the US, the village is riddled with beautiful architecture to equal the natural wonders of the Connecticut countryside.

The town of Glastonbury has 5 distinct historic districts, comprising 154 houses built before 1800. The architectural styles vary among districts, ranging from Colonial to Greek Revival to Queen Anne. Scenic tours are offered of the oldest house in town, the John Hollister House, built in 1675. Glastonbury is also home to the oldest continuously operating ferry in the United States, which connects South Glastonbury across the river to Rocky Hill. Along the Connecticut River you’ll find the Historic Glastonbury Boathouse at Riverfront Park, and the nearby Historical Society of Glastonbury, which operates a free museum in the village’s historic town hall.

Glastonbury is known for its orchards and wineries, and hosts the Apple Harvest and Music Festival each October, featuring locally made wares and plenty of entertainment. The surrounding countryside is home to Cotton Hollow Nature Preserve, an old growth forest which houses the ruins of a nineteenth-century cotton mill. The town of Glastonbury is also home to five private country clubs: Minnechaug Golf Course, Orchard Hill, Woodledge Club, Pinebrook, and the Glastonbury Hills Country Club.

Transportation

Due to its location just outside Hartford, Glastonbury’s transportation services are provided by the city’s CT Transit. CT Transit offers a dial-a-ride service and also has a reduced fare program for seniors.
