Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual support. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for leisurely activity, supervision of care, and aid with daily activities. In certain instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . Connecticut has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing licenses this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, disease prevention, wellness counseling, and assistance with self-administered medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , reminding residents to take medications, and opening medication packages. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: assisted living philosophy, applicable regulations, aides must pass a competency exam, and 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, and medications, treatments, and other required nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day.
