Forever Grateful to The Bristal
My Dad spent four years at The Bristal of East Northport, NY, living in their memory care section, Reflections. Reflections is aesthetically designed and decorated providing a living environment filled with color, texture, and light. Its immaculate condition offers a healthy, safe and comfortable environment. Staff are well-trained, knowledgeable, patient, and their personal connections with the residents enhances everyone's day-to-day experience. Daily specifically-designed activities are engaging, meaningful, and lively. On-site nurses provide top-notch medical support. [Name removed] is the Executive Director. She and her staff run a well-managed, highly supportive, and responsive facility. At the heart of Reflections is Ms. [name removed], Director. Her skillful oversight and open-door policy, offered an invaluable connection to our family. Bottom line; the last four years of my Dad’s life was significantly better due to The Bristal, its facilities, and its incredible staff.

Lovely!
The staff at the East Northport Bristal is always kind. They always have a smile on their faces and are genuinely sweet and loving to my mom. The facility is ALWAYS spotless and beautiful to live in or visit. The only area I see occasional improvement for is the food. It is not always hot and more fresh veggies needed. The personal care and overall facility is excellent.

Difficult But Right Decision
Our dad joined the Reflections group at The Bristal of East Northport two months ago and, to-date, we are very satisfied with this difficult decision. During our initial research effort, we felt that the staff we met with were genuine, honest, and extremely helpful in answering our questions. During the move-in process, all involved staff members were, again, helpful, patient, and supportive of this difficult task both on the family and the new resident. Since then, we have been happy with the number and type of activities offered to the residents on a daily basis. The aides are all pleasant, helpful, and concerned about our dad's well-being .... our visits are all unannounced. After two months our dad considers The Bristal his home.

Bristal East Northport
Just moved my Mom into the Bristal, East Northport the other day. The facility is beautiful, like an upscale hotel with all the amenities. Although it's really too early to evaluate my mom’s stay I was very impressed by the Staff. Paul and Bonnie, the administers, were very helpful and provided support and were very kind and understanding throughout the enrollment process. [Name removed] and [name removed] were very nice and helped a lot during my mom's first couple of days. The facility aside, the real reason we selected the Bristal can be summed up in one word "[name removed]" [name removed] is the Recreational Director, she is "WONDERFUL" She met my family & I to give us a tour of the facility. Normally, this is not her function at the Bristal, but, because I called only hours before we wanted to see the facility, we were accommodated and [name removed] and [name removed] had previous commitments. [Name removed] welcomed us with open arms. She has so much passion and love for the residents. This was immediately apparent as she walked us through the Bristal and was met with hugs and kisses from the residents. As she explained,” this is my family” and she really loves her job. The activities and events that she has implemented are both inventive and well thought out. The day we moved my mom was on Halloween. [Name removed] was dressed as Tinker Bell and Grand Marshaled a Halloween parade with the most adorable children from one of the local schools. The Residents loved it. This was followed by activities throughout the day including, entertainment, live music, and mummy wrapping in the gathering room. In my opinion, [name removed] is the show case for the Bristal. There was a wait list to get my mom into the Bristal, East Northport. This was not the case for surrounding Bristal’s on Long Island or other assisted living facilities. Other assisted livings communities are just as ascetically pleasing and have the same type of accommodations. So why a wait list for the East Northport Bristal. I can only surmise it’s because of “[name removed]”, her resident activities and the love she brings to the Bristal, East Northport. Good Job Bristal

STAY AWAY !!!!!
In my family's experience, The Bristal at East Northport is like a movie set - it looks fabulous on the outside but once we went behind the scenes, we found it was nothing but a facade. THINK VERY CAREFULLY before you place a loved one in this facility ! While most of the general staff were kind and tried hard, management created a hostile and inept environment. When he applied to be accepted as a resident at The Bristal, my father had some memory issues, but he was entirely capable of independently taking care of himself (showering, dressing, getting himself down to meals, and all other activities of daily living). The Bristal was aware of his issues, and that he was taking memory medication, when they accepted him into the facility. Over the 9 months that our dad was at this facility, we found that: 1) when an issue arose, their way to address it was to ask us to pay more money. One example- As the weather got warmer we asked that the staff to remind my father to drink water so he did not get dehydrated. We were told that this was not covered by the aprox $7,300/month we were already paying and that in order to to give him such reminders we had to up his care level - an additional $11/day ($330+/mo) 2) you cannot rely on the medical staff (while I believe they try their best, from what I saw my best guess as to why you cant rely on them is because they have too many residents for too few staff members) 2 examples: - We voiced concern to management about my dad's weight loss. They suggested that we give him a supplement shake (like Ensure) once or twice a day but said they needed a prescription in order to give it to him anything, even items that are over-the-counter. MORE THAN ONE MONTH after the Rx was delivered to them we found out he was not getting the Ensure. Why? Because the Rx said "as needed", which required my dad to go to the Wellness Center and ask for them. Wellness knew of my dad's memory issues and knew of our concern for his weight yet never called us to explain how the Rx was written and suggest we obtain one that did not say "as needed". - My dad started seeing the facility's therapist. MULTIPLE TIMES I asked that they have the therapist call me to discuss my dad. (I even witnessed notes being made in my dad's records, and after a number of requests an email was also sent) I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL OR CONTACT INFORMATION ! 3)[Removed]. When any issues or concerns arose, rather than having a meeting with my family to explain the situation and try to come up with an appropriate Care Plan (a term I learned only AFTER we had to hire an advocate for my dad)[Removed] would telephone us and in a hostile and dictatorial manner tell us what we were going to do (which ALWAYS involved paying MORE MONEY). He even [Removed] to serve my father with a 30 day notice to evict if we did not do what he said. In my opinion, when [Removed] became involved he only made situations worse. 4) Less than one month after my dad moved in, despite the fact that he remained completely independent in his activities of daily living, the facility's social worker advised us that they wanted to move him into the memory unit (again, more money). This, together with my experiences over the course of his living at the Bristal, left me with the impression that The Bristal ACCEPTED HIM INTO THEIR FACILITY WITH THE INTENT TO SHIFT HIM INTO THE MORE EXPENSIVE MEMORY UNIT ASAP. Over the 9 months that my dad was at this facility, it was clear my father's mental condition was deteriorating and changes needed to be made. It was an extremely vulnerable place to be - deciding how to best take care of our dad who had always taken such wonderful care of us. Instead of lending a comforting, helping and experienced hand, the hostility and pressure we received from this facility was beyond anything I can explain. We are very grateful that we learned of a wonderful advocate and placement person, who helped us find and move my father to The Atria in East Northport. What a difference !

Response from The Bristal at East Northport
May 16, 2017
At The Bristal at East Northport, as with all our communities, we conduct a thorough evaluation and intake session of all residents prior to acceptance. This review helps us determine with the family the amount of additional care every resident may or may not require that goes beyond assistance with ADLs, or activities of daily living. This is standard practice across the assisted living industry. After time, it is not uncommon to discover that the amount of daily care the resident actually needs exceeds what was initially estimated during the interview; or perhaps subsequent changes in resident health, habits, memory or even family preference require greater care than was originally planned. Again, this is standard practice for the industry. Senior health and senior care are ever-changing dynamics. When we encounter such changes, we are compelled by the New York State Department of Health, as well as our own commitment to excellence, to increase the level of care and attention the resident receives. And yes, this may cost more. Rest assured that at The Bristal we operate with the highest standards of integrity, and our interest is never in arbitrarily raising costs for profit; rather, our priority is that each resident receives the level of care and attention needed to ensure his or her safety, comfort, health and well-being. In addition to the above, we ask you please to consider this: When it comes to making a choice about an assisted living community, we have found over our more than a decade operating that every resident and family has unique and diverse needs — distinct expectations, priorities, perspectives and experiences — and that some aspects which prove essential for some families are less important to others. This is why we encourage all families who are considering The Bristal to visit us in person, take a tour, ask their own questions, and see for themselves what makes us such a successful and sought after senior care solution in the communities we are privileged to serve.

Great Place.
My father moved in a few months ago and has loved it. The staff there is top notch, and friendly. He's quickly made friends with the people he sits with for meals, and has been enjoying himself. From my stand point the cost is well worth the piece of mind knowing that my dad is in a safe, friendly environment and that assistance is always available 24/7.

Bristal, East Northport
The entire Bristal staff bent over backwards to make the move from home to their community an easy transition for my parents. The building itself is lovely; it is like living in an upscale hotel with many daily activities and delightful entertainment. Of note is that the staff is particularly engaged, upbeat, warm and helpful - from front desk staff to activity staff to dining room staff to maintenance through to administration. We especially appreciated the help in setting up my parent's apartment. My parents have not seemed this happy, this well, this alive in many years.

Making the decision that it is time to leave your home and seek assisted living options, is a major life decision. For my parents, it was a decision that needed to be made quickly due to health concerns. From the moment we entered the Bristal, my parents felt welcomed and valued. Each and every staff member we encountered was warm and genuine. A year later my parents are settled, acclimated, and enjoying their new home and community. I am very grateful to the Bristal for making this transition as smooth and positive as possible.

New life at the Bristal
My mother moved into the Bristal in East Northport in August 2015. She was having difficulty getting around her large home and had given up driving the year before. She moved into a lovely one bedroom apartment that she decorated with her furniture and all her treasures from home. She loves her apartment, it is cozy, homey, and a perfect size for her. It is still large enough for friends and family to visit. The amenities that come with living at the Bristal have made her life so much easier. The girls that clean her apartment and do her laundry do a wonderful job and mom has grown very fond of them. Having to give up driving was one of the hardest adjustments mom has had to make. The Bristal bus and wonderful driver has given mom a sense of independence once again. She does her banking, food shopping, trips to Macy's, Chico'a as well as lunch outings. Mom has an outgoing personality who loves to interact with others. She has become friends with many of the other residents and enjoys the company of all the staff members. The staff are all friendly and caring individuals. Her days are filled with activities and social interaction. Although mom had to leave a home she loved and many dear friends ( she still sees them ) she has made a new and wonderful life living at the Bristal. We do not worry about her living alone anymore .

Smiles
My wife (70) has advanced early onset Alzheimer's, but her spirits are generally good. She likes to walk and does not like to sit for long. Day Care in town was becoming difficult for the staff in a small one room facility. I found The Bristal and knew right away that this was the place for her. The Reflections (dementia) wing is a circular residential area and my wife could walk as much as she wants. She now goes to Day Care there five days a week and is always smiles on her way there and when I pick her up. It offers great flexibility on time and services. The staff at The Bristal could not be better. They all are cheerful and very, very caring. They become an extended family. They supervise many activities, so attendees never get bored. We were so pleased with the Bristal that we recommended it to my son's mother-in-law, who has Parkinson's . She lived by herself in NYC and liked the action of the City and was reluctant to make any move, but she now loves it.

Just Keeps Getting Better...
At first, Mom was a little reluctant making the move from her own home to the Bristal in East Northport, but within a few months she was "right at home". She has many friends to talk to, and she loves her apartment. She always tells me the staff couldn't be more helpful, and that they make sure there's always something to do, and the food is delicious! She's never in her room anymore...always "out" and about. I Highly recommend The Bristal, as I'm sure Mom would.

The Bristal at East Northport is a Gem
The staff and team at The Bristal at East Northport has truly cared for my grandmother like she was a part of their family. Since she moved into the building in October 2014, my grandmother has participated in games, dancing, art, and so many more community/social activities that she has enjoyed. We are so grateful to the staff and team for everything they do to keep her safe and to keep her happy. As a resident in the Reflections unit, she is certainly cared for and given the dignity and love she deserves. Thank you!

Rapid response to a fall.
My mother has been at the Bristal since April 2013, and has been enjoying having people to eat with, socialize, and controlling her own thermostat. This week, she fell in her apartment, and for the first time she pressed her emergency pendant. I was outside waiting for her to take her to an appointment. I realized something was wrong when she didn't answer her phone or come down. I went upstairs and there were two aides with her and the ambulance had been called. The quick response and knowing she is watched gives me a sense of relief. When we returned from the ER, she was given TLC all night and the next day. We both felt so comfortable. Can't praise the staff enough.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the New York regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about New York regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored The Bristal at East Northport 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
