Response from Suffield by the River
August 7, 2023Thank you for the wonderful review! We couldn't be happier to hear it.
My loved one is currently a resident at Suffield by the River. It's a nice facility, but we were misled upfront about the level of care needed. I would recommend getting your loved one's Initial Care Plan Assessment in writing, in the case that you receive unexpected charges.

Response from Suffield by the River
May 31, 2023Thank you for your feedback, and for being a part of our Suffield by the River community. We are sorry if you feel misled by your loved one's assessment. One of the difficult things about customized care plans is the unpredictability that can accompany a person's health day-to-day. What appears to be an adequate approach can change suddenly for a variety of reasons, and our chief responsibility is to make sure that we can react and adjust quickly to provide the best care and a safe environment. I would urge you to be in close contact with the Resident Care Director and the Executive Director if you are not already. Their chief responsibility is to strike just the right balance of care along the way, without doing anything that is unnecessary--or inadequate--in ensuring the best possible experience for you and your family.
We have not been very happy with Suffield by the River. It's a beautiful facility. Unfortunately we are quite disappointed with the care my mom has been receiving and the stress that puts on my father. The aids would benefit from more and consistent training. And I would recommend more staff aids rather than using an outside service. They are revamping the administration with three new administrators at one time. They keep their distance from the residents. They refer to some staff as doctors yet yet they are PAs. (House physician and Podiatrist). Mom's care has been abysmal. Except for her regular morning aid the other aids are not properly trained nor are they consistent with her care. The am and pm aids come at varying times and they actually forgot my mom one evening. Mom even fell when a new untrained aid came alone to prepare my mom for bed. The residents are required to buy their buzzers yet they often take a long time to respond and one time went to the wrong apartment. When it comes to the meals, the breakfast is great and the fact that my parents can go to the dining room at anytime and sit with whoever they want is great. Other than that the food is pretty awful, except for the baked good. Billing issues were almost impossible to resolve. No one wants to talk to you. Initially they were quite rude about adjusting their bill to reflect the promises of their marketing manager.

Response from Suffield by the River
April 12, 2023Thank you for your feedback--constructive criticism is key to us in assessing our services and improving what could be better. First, we are truly sorry that you are unsatisfied with aspects of your experience with us. Over our 25 years in the business our goal has always been 100% satisfaction, and we do not take your concerns lightly. We do have a comprehensive and ongoing training regimen that all care associates partake in, and we're sorry that you did not see evidence of that. Unfortunately, due to the labor shortages caused by COVID our industry and all of healthcare was forced to rely on agency help to maintain appropriate standards of care. Thankfully, those constraints are easing up in recent months and we are seeing things returning to normal. As for your additional thoughts, we are taking a close look to see if there are ways that we can improve service delivery across the board. Our Executive Director is always available to meet with you and your loved ones to discuss any and all questions that you might have, as are executives at LCB Senior Living, which owns and operates this community. Best, regards.
We really like how Suffield by the River has different levels of care in the same complex - there is independent living, assisted living, memory care and there is even a nursing home right next door that we believe they have some affiliation with. The location is very ideal for our family and we also like that it is not huge, it is a smaller facility that does not get overwhelming. There are plenty of sufficient activities for the residents there - our loved one seems happy with them. The meals started off really good and then there was a turnover in their staff so the meals dropped off and were disconnected, but they are recovering now so the meals are better.

Response from Suffield by the River
February 22, 2023Thank you for your review, David. We appreciate your patience as we have dealt with the ongoing staffing shortage in the country and are happy to hear that the experience at Suffield has been overall positive for you and your family. As you mentioned, we do offer independent and assisted living as well as memory care but are not affiliated with any nursing homes including the one next to our community.
Suffield by the River is a very nice and welcoming community and right when you walk in there is no smell so you know they do a great job cleaning. With it being very nice it is on the pricier side, but the meals and dining services are really good and their are plenty of activities going on for the residents to do. We would absolutely recommend this community to other families.

Response from Suffield by the River
July 20, 2022Thank you so much for your review! We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed the service and care at Suffield by the River.
The dining hall on the assisted living side is super nice and they have great activities, on the memory care side the activities are a little bit more limited. The value for the money is pretty good. It is like every other place right now they could have a little bit more staffing bot overall they have done a really nice job.

June 29, 2022Hi Ron, thank you so much for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to review our community and are glad to hear your loved one is enjoying our community.
They have had tremendous turnover this past year. Food quality is suspect. Never see any really fresh vegetables and fruits. No real effort at getting residents hydrated. Activities have picked up in last 3 months but still short staffed and some of the staff they have get paid under [price removed] per hour and not properly trained in dementia care. LCB is first a business with great expansion plans for the [name removed] family. Maybe concentrate on facilities you have already before expanding so rapidly just to take monetary advantage of demographic swing in America? Step up level of care in your memory units or get out of business and just put up apartments. Your margins will be less but at least you will not be responsible for increasing the likelihood of having elderly loved one not taken proper care of.

Response from Suffield by the River
July 21, 2022You bring up a number of issues and we hope that you have had the opportunity to discuss them with our Executive Director. Suffield by the River is a very successful community and so we take any constructive criticism very seriously. Any deficiency in service or in meeting resident expectations is unacceptable, and so we will be looking at the things you mentioned very closely. In the meantime, we would like the opportunity to speak to you directly as most of the things that you reference are new to us as concerns.
I'm really not impressed with them at all. They ruined the last weeks of my husband's life. I wouldn't recommend them to a dog.
Response from Suffield by the River
May 19, 2022Our deepest condolences on the loss of your husband. We are so sorry that you had such a difficult time while with us, and would happy to meet or speak with you at you convenience.
We have had a great experience so far with Suffield by the River. We chose this facility because it was recommended to us and after meeting with the staff here we felt very comfortable. Their personalities really drew us in and they make the residents feel like family. The room sizes here are very good, they are more like apartments. The food here is OUTSTANDING, they are chef prepared meals and the chefs are always asking for residents feedback and cater to their needs. I would highly recommend the community.

April 9, 2021Thank you for sharing! We're thrilled to know you've enjoyed our community, our culinary team and their delicious creations, and the amazing associates we have! It means so much to us that you've taken the time to leave us a review. Thanks again!
I am very pleased with the care that my mom is getting here. She has started to settle in well, she likes being part of the many activities they offer, she enjoys going to the dining room and the food and I have noticed just how friendly and attentive all the staff are here. They greet you when you're there to visit and they interact with all the residents so well. I would definitely recommend this community.

I love this community for both of my parents. The staff are kind and supportive and they go out of there way to be helpful. The community is so very clean. The menu is like restaurant and very good. They like doing the activities to help them be active. Alot of holiday party. I would highly recommend this community for the outstanding care and good value to other families.

My loved one did not have a good experience at this community. They are very short staffed. They treat people like they are numbers instead of treating them like they are human beings and this can cause a lot of harm to a person living in that environment. My loved one is happier now that they live someplace else.

A Place for Mom has scored Suffield by the River 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
