How we determine rankings

Our 2023 state ranking for assisted living uses A Place for Mom’s proprietary data collected from our community partners. First, we sorted through our metrics and grouped them into three pillars that are key in a quality assisted living experience. We weighted these pillars differently based on insights from our senior living experts. Then, we used these categories and their weighting to determine how each state ranks.

Paying for assisted living in West Virginia

Seniors and their families can utilize a variety of payment methods to cover assisted living costs in West Virginia. We recommend planning as soon as you can, because more time enables your family to research and identify the best payment plan options. Most families combine private and public sources to pay for assisted living. In this section, you’ll find potential funding options and resources. You can also check out our guide to paying for long-term care for another overview of the funding options most utilized by residents at our partner facilities.

Private pay options vary between seniors and families due to personal situations. Your potential options may include savings accounts, retirement pensions, investment returns, or any of the options listed below.

Selling a house

Some West Virginia seniors sell their homes to fund their living and care expenses at an assisted living community.

Reverse mortgage

For seniors who don’t want to sell their homes, taking out a loan based on their home’s equity may be a better option to help pay for assisted living in West Virginia.

Health savings accounts (HSA)

West Virginia seniors who have funded a health savings account, also known as an HSA, can use their savings to cover some medical and assisted living costs.

Life insurance

Certain life insurance policies can be borrowed from, surrendered, or sold to help pay for assisted living in West Virginia.

Long-term care insurance

Long-term care insurance policies often vary in what they cover, but West Virginia seniors may be able to use it to cover some care services provided at an assisted living community.

Social Security benefits for assisted living

West Virginia seniors who qualify for Social Security can use their benefits to offset assisted living costs.

Assisted living requirements and regulations in West Virginia

In West Virginia, assisted living facilities are commonly referred to as assisted living residences (ALRs). These facilities are regulated and licensed by the Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification at the Department of Health and Human Resources.

To qualify as an assisted living residence in West Virginia, a facility must provide housing, personal care services, supervision, and some skilled nursing services to four or more residents. If a facility provides care to 4-16 residents, it’s considered a small assisted living residence. And, if a facility provides care to 17 or more residents, it’s considered a large assisted living residence.[05]

Assisted living residences undergo an initial inspection before licensure. Thereafter, facilities are inspected on a yearly basis. You can find an assisted living residence’s most recent inspection report using the Office of Health Facility’s Licensure and Certification’s Health Care Facility Lookup.

Inspection reports of assisted living facilities in West Virginia contain information pertaining to the following:

  • Date of inspection
  • Reason for inspection
  • Deficiencies found
  • Provided plan of correction
  • Date deficiencies were cleared
