An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and assistance to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, dementia care, or respite. West Virginia has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal assistance, assistance in making appointments for dental and medical services, help in following planned diets, and help with self administration of medications and medication administration. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include giving injections, opening medication containers for residents, and observing residents while they take the medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as staffing patterns, effective behavioral management techniques, assessment must provide information about the resident s health status and functional, psychosocial, activity, and dietary needs, and each resident must receive a functional needs assessment completed in writing by a physician or other licensed health care professionall. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include residents rights, complaint procedures, emergency procedures and disaster plans, and confidentiality. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include they must provide three meals a day, snacks, and and provisions for special diets, staff training must include the topic of nutrition., Therapeutic or modified diets must be prepared according to a physician s or dietician s orders., and The residence must accommodate residents who are unable to eat at planned mealtimes and provide for meal substitution if the resident does not tolerate or like the food provided.
