Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, outings for recreational activity, and assistance with appointments and transportation. In select instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or respite. West Virginia has specific standards related to this type of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification governs this community type. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: abuse prevention and reporting, emergency procedures and disaster plans, infection control, and confidentiality. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in making appointments for dental and medical services, or use of equipment, Alzheimer s/dementia training, and activity regimens. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as antecedent behaviors, activities that have been successful in addressing the behaviors in the past, the resident s medical status, and environmental factors. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reassuring residents that they have obtained and are taking the dosage as prescribed, reminding residents to take medication, and giving injections. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must substantially comply with the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Science s Food and Nutrition Board, staff training must include the topic of nutrition., The residence must accommodate residents who are unable to eat at planned mealtimes and provide for meal substitution if the resident does not tolerate or like the food provided, and they must provide three meals a day, snacks, and and provisions for special diets. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
