Assisted living communities offer social interaction, care, and supervision to individuals who are about 65 years old. Services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or dementia care. West Virginia has specific standards related to this type of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include they must provide three meals a day, snacks, and and provisions for special diets, Therapeutic or modified diets must be prepared according to a physician s or dietician s orders., meals must substantially comply with the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Science s Food and Nutrition Board, and staff training must include the topic of nutrition.. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Staff must receive education in a number of subjects. These include: infection control, group and individual resident activities, residents rights, and complaint procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as effective behavioral management techniques, staffing patterns, evaluate residents who have behavioral problems to determine their intensity, duration, and frequency, and activities that have been successful in addressing the behaviors in the past. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include help in following planned diets, help with self administration of medications and medication administration, Alzheimer s/dementia training, and personal assistance. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reassuring residents that they have obtained and are taking the dosage as prescribed, reminding residents to take medication, and observing residents while they take the medication.
