Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual care. Services offered often include help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain instances, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or respite. The state of West Virginia has specific rules associated with this type of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as activities that have been successful in addressing the behaviors in the past, the resident s medical status, effective behavioral management techniques, and assessment must provide information about the resident s health status and functional, psychosocial, activity, and dietary needs. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing residents while they take the medication, reminding residents to take medication, and checking the self-administered dose against the label on the container. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include specialty care based on individualized residents needs and service plans, the residence s policies and procedures, residents rights, and group and individual resident activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Therapeutic or modified diets must be prepared according to a physician s or dietician s orders., staff training must include the topic of nutrition., meals must substantially comply with the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Science s Food and Nutrition Board, and The residence must accommodate residents who are unable to eat at planned mealtimes and provide for meal substitution if the resident does not tolerate or like the food provided. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in making appointments for dental and medical services, or use of equipment, help in following planned diets, and personal assistance.
