An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, aid, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with transit and appointments, supervision of care, and support with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or respite. West Virginia has specific rules related to this kind of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Therapeutic or modified diets must be prepared according to a physician s or dietician s orders., they must provide three meals a day, snacks, and and provisions for special diets, staff training must include the topic of nutrition., and meals must substantially comply with the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Science s Food and Nutrition Board. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as environmental factors, assessment must provide information about the resident s health status and functional, psychosocial, activity, and dietary needs, each resident must receive a functional needs assessment completed in writing by a physician or other licensed health care professionall, and evaluate residents who have behavioral problems to determine their intensity, duration, and frequency. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening medication containers for residents, reassuring residents that they have obtained and are taking the dosage as prescribed, and giving injections. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity regimens, personal assistance, or use of equipment, and help with self administration of medications and medication administration. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: confidentiality, abuse prevention and reporting, group and individual resident activities, and complaint procedures.
