Assisted living communities administer social interaction, oversight, and healthcare to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide aid with transit and appointments, care supervision, and chances for recreational activity. West Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Health communities Licensure and Certification governs this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The residence must accommodate residents who are unable to eat at planned mealtimes and provide for meal substitution if the resident does not tolerate or like the food provided, they must provide three meals a day, snacks, and and provisions for special diets, meals must substantially comply with the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Science s Food and Nutrition Board, and staff training must include the topic of nutrition.. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the resident s medical status, staffing patterns, environmental factors, and evaluate residents who have behavioral problems to determine their intensity, duration, and frequency. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: complaint procedures, confidentiality, abuse prevention and reporting, and infection control. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal assistance, assistance in making appointments for dental and medical services, or use of equipment, and activity regimens. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include giving injections, observing residents while they take the medication, and checking the self-administered dose against the label on the container.
