An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and aid to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide chances for social activity, assistance with transportation and appointments, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. The state of Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services governs this type of community. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include periodic health care and oversight through a licensed health care professionall, Provide protection, guidance, and supervision, Meet the service plan objectives, and 24-hour supervision. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: Residents rights and responsibilities, Specific duties and requirements of their positions, procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and reporting requirements. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living.
