Assisted living communities offer personal care, recreational activities, and oversight to persons who are on average 65 years old. Services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or continuing care. Virginia has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services regulates this community type. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, Residents rights and responsibilities, first-aid and cpr training, and hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides , and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal and health care services, Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us, Promote a sense of security and self-worth, and 24-hour supervision. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant and Initial comprehensive assessment . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, three nutritious meals must be provided each day, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist.
