|| 5 Questions for Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted Living in Chester, Virginia

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a long-term senior care option that includes support for the activities of daily living such as meals or snacks, showering, dressing and medication management. It isn't exactly like a nursing home, where residents can expect round-the-clock skilled nursing care. Every assisted living community has its mixture of offerings, amenities, activities and lifestyle. Many also provide assistance for seniors with specific needs such as diabetes, incontinence management needs or the early stages of cognitive loss because of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Assisted Living Vs. Memory Care

According to the National Center for Assisted Living, nearly one in four seniors currently in assisted living in the state of Virginia experience Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. In addition, many assisted living communities include support for residents with cognitive issues. So how figure out if designated memory care or just assisted living is what your family member needs?

Although many assisted living facilities offer memory care onsite, each of the varieties of care are not the same. Memory care will provide full-time specialized services for somebody with Alzheimer's while assisted living is designed to meet the needs of those who want help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, getting dressed or dining. Assisted living can be a good choice for people in the earlier stages of dementia but for individuals who have experienced wandering problems or who've caused injury to themselves or others, a secured memory care environment is most likely a more suitable option.

If you have specific questions about what sort of care your loved one requires, talk to a physician. They can help you evaluate whether assisted living will work or if you need to search for memory care. You may also talk to one of our Senior Living Advisors. They have helped many individuals with concerns about what kind of care may be the best fit for his or her relative or friend and so they can help you, too.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

While each community is unique, most assisted living communities offer a variety of living arrangements, an array of meal choices, public spaces and complimentary transportation, among other services and amenities. Some examples are:

  • Activities, entertainment and events, both on-site and off
  • Workout and wellness programs
  • Housekeeping, including bed-linen assistance
  • Access to medical experts

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in Virginia

The state of Virginia offers outstanding access to its information for assisted living facilities through the Virginia Department of Social Services. Data available to review contains the dates of inspection, whether an inspection was caused by a issue, whether the inspector discovered any infractions and what the plan of correction was to handle a violation. Look by by facility name or zip code to get the facilities in the areas you are thinking about.

In the state of Virginia, assisted living facilities are required for legal reasons to:

  • Allow only two individuals to reside in one bedroom
  • Provide handrails, nonskid floors and grab bars in every bath tub and shower
  • Equip all sleeping rooms with connecting bathrooms with signaling equipment that residents can use in case they want help.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Chester?

According to the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Index, the average cost of assisted living in the larger Chester, Virginia , metropolitan area in 2018 ranged from $1500 to $7550 monthly. Charges for assisted living can vary widely depending on services, amenities and location, so that it pays to take a look in close by suburbs and communities if you have that flexibility.

The Senior Living Cost Index is based on the real prices families pay when they move to assisted living and it is the primary cost index of its kind. To find out more about senior living costs, visit the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Planner web page.

How to Pay for Senior Living In Chester, VA

Many family members pay for a move to assisted living through the sale of a home or personal savings, but for some people, this may not be an option. Here are three other approaches that may help you pay for assisted living:

  • Veterans Benefits: Many seniors may qualify for veterans benefits that they don’t aren't aware of. One benefit specifically, Aid & Attendance, has made it possible for a large number of families afford to pay for assisted living. To meet the criteria, veterans need to be at least 65 years old and have served at least 3 months of active duty, with at least 1 day during what the Veterans Administration considers active wartime periods. Qualifying widows and widowers of veterans may also be in a position to collect benefits. With the current average age group of U.S. veterans at 64 years old, it’s worth it to find out if your family member may qualify for benefits. See our Guide to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for more details or contact the Virginia Department of Veterans Services or Veterans Information for Virginia to learn more or head to va.gov.
  • Life Insurance Policies. If the senior you are helping move into assisted living has a life insurance policy, you may be able to cash out the plan and obtain funds today. Different limitations and regulations apply depending on the type of plan you have, so get in touch with a monetary specialist or elderlaw lawyer to discover more about your options and to assess what’s ideal for your position.
  • Reverse Mortgages. For senior couples who may have different needs, a reverse mortgage can be a good way for one person to go into assisted living while the other remains at home while his or her spouse transitions to senior living. A reverse mortgage allows property owners aged 62 or older to borrow against their home equity. To learn more, contact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to look for a reverse mortgage counseling agency in your area.

For more ideas about how to pay for your move to senior living, contact A Place for Mom to speak to a Senior Living Advisor today. Or find even more details on our 5 Best-Kept Secrets to Financing Senior Care web page.

5 Questions to Ask an Assisted Living Facility

Finding the right assisted living facility is an important decision, both for a senior and for his or her family. Here are five things to consider when considering making the move to assisted living:

  1. What is the staff-to-resident ratio? Can this facility provide your family member with the support they need? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living communities possess a ratio of 1 personal care assistant for each 23 residents. Staffing may differ greatly based on the size of the facility, so make sure to enquire about the communities you are interested in.
  2. Is there yard? For most residents making the changeover from an individual home to assisted living means giving up a beloved backyard or outdoor area, so the ability to access a gardening area, an outdoor patio or a courtyard is normally beneficial. Many larger assisted living facilities offer a range of yards, with features such as strolling paths, gardens and BBQ spaces for community events.
  3. Just how many staff are on hand to assist at night? Some assisted living facilities provide 24x7 nursing staff, while others may have more generalized assistance on hand after hours. In the state of Virginia, assisted living facilities must have at the least two direct care staff members awake and available at all times.
  4. Is there a wait list? Preferred facilities can fill up fast. If the main one you like is not available, find out about the waiting list and what the community’s policy is for managing it. Many facilities will require a deposit and some communities have internal lists for special treatment needs. Here is where doing your homework can actually pay off -- plan in advance!
  5. What solutions are included in the monthly fee? Before signing the contract, it’s smart to understand what is covered in the basic charge structure and what might incur additional cost. Some communities use a fee-for-services model, or a la carte pricing, this means they charge a regular fee for rent and meals but additional costs for things like medication management. Others may use a tiered prices model where varied levels of care are charged different fees.

For more details about what to search for when going to an assisted living community, check out our Assisted Living Residence Checklist page.

How Do I Choose the Right Assisted Living Facility?

With so many options to choose from, finding the right assisted living community can seem like a daunting task. That’s where our Senior Living Advisors might help -- they are qualified in helping match seniors to the services that will be the best fit because of their care needs, personality and budget.

Here are a few things to remember during your search:

  • Be sure to search for your loved one, not you. Today’s assisted living communities offer everything from homey settings to upscale resort-style grand living. It can be easy to end up being swayed by the features and experiences you might choose for yourself, but eventually it boils down to what will work best for your loved one.
  • Focus on the present, not the past. Does your family member want help washing and dressing? Do they have particular needs like limited vision or special diets? Would they benefit from the benefits of a larger community or be a little more more comfortable in a smaller, more intimate environment?
  • Take into account the here and today, not what might have been their choice ten or 15 years ago.
  • Intend to tour at least three to five communities, if you're able to. Start with scheduled tours and consider having a meal with the residents. If none of them seems like a good fit, ask your Senior Living Advisor for more choices. And don’t hesitate to ask questions and take notes while you’re there.

The task of deciding on the best assisted living community can be overpowering, but there are assets that can help. Call A Place for Mom today -- we are able to help save you time and money and be sure you make the correct choice.
