A nursing home facility offers room and board to at least two persons who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of establishment provides its inhabitants with care administered by on-site nurses. These caregivers provide health related services for seniors who cannot adequately take care of themselves because of mental or physical conditions, including age.

Some services come at an extra cost which can include a private room, unless medically needed, personal reading materials, and cosmetic and grooming items. A significant number of nursing home inhabitants are persons who have incontinence issues, experience difficulty with hearing and seeing, have mental or physical disabilities, or require assistance with daily tasks such as getting dressed.
