Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, support, and care to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with the activities of daily life, aid with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. In select instances, communities may provide dementia care, skilled nursing, or respite. Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Meet residents physical, mental, emotional, and psychosocial needs, periodic health care and oversight through a licensed health care professionall, Monitoring the community s medication management plan and infection control plans, and 24-hour supervision. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides , and a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, three nutritious meals must be provided each day, and bedtime and between meal snacks must be available. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: reporting requirements, hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior, emergency and disaster plans, including those for evacuating residents., and Specific duties and requirements of their positions.
