An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, support, and assistance to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or respite. Virginia has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services supervises this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, three nutritious meals must be provided each day, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior, Residents rights and responsibilities, and first-aid and cpr training. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Monitoring the community s medication management plan and infection control plans, Promote a sense of security and self-worth, Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us, and periodic health care and oversight through a licensed health care professionall–. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable.
