Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides aid, supervision, and care to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific rules related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, laundry, emergency response systems, and non-medical services. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include infection control, independence, choice, and resident rights. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, observing the resident, and medication reminders.
