Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and health care for people who require a helping hand with everyday activities such as washing or self-administering medication. The services offered often include help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, observing the resident, and medication administration. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: neglect prevention, self-determination, hygiene, and residents’ need and service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, A comprehensive assessment, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, security, supervision of self-administered medications, and medication administration.
