Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized care. Assisted living communities often offer assistance with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and outings for recreational activity. In certain situations, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, emergency response systems, non-medical services, and housekeeping. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: job responsibilities and limitations, confidentiality, philosophy and goals, and independence. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, observing the resident, and supervision of self-administered medications.
