Assisted living communities have the luxury of regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual support. Assisted living communities often provide outings for social activity, aid with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In some situations, communities may offer nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include privacy, infection control, independence, and self-determination. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, housekeeping, non-medical services, and laundry. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, medication reminders, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety.
