Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and aid for seniors who need support with things such as showering or mobility. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with the activities of daily life, assistance with appointments and transportation, and outings for recreational activity. In select cases, communities may offer continuing care, dementia care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include choice, confidentiality, reporting, and internal policies. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, supervision of self-administered medications, security, and assistance with activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident, reading the medication label to residents, and medication administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents.
