Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care for persons who may need help with things such as dressing or mobility. The services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, housekeeping, security, and emergency response systems. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident, reading the medication label to residents, and medication reminders. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These include: resident rights, abuse, self-determination, and residents’ need and service plans. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
