Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid for persons who require a helping hand with things such as preparing meals or mobility. Services offered often include help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, “aging in place”, or nursing. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, and staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, and medical examination report. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include universal precautions, infection control, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, and resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation.
