Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual care. The types of service provided often include support with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or continuing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: 26 hours of training plus a competency test, community sanitation procedures, infection control, and 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, assistance with activities of daily living , and personal care services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community .
