Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, care, and support to medically stable seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Services provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In some cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, reading the label, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include community emergency procedures, infection control, universal precautions, and resident behavior and needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and personal care services.
