Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual support. The types of service provided often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some cases, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: providing assistance with activities of daily living, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, reporting incidents, and community sanitation procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and reading the label. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
