Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care for seniors who might require help with things such as cooking meals or dressing. Assisted living communities often offer assistance with appointments and transportation, outings for leisurely activity, and supervision of care. In select situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , personal care services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and nursing services. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include community emergency procedures, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident rights, and community sanitation procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration.
