Assisted living communities administer healthcare, supervision, and social opportunities to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently offer help with transit and appointments, support with daily activities, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and communities must document such assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include licensed nursing staff may administer medications, staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, and reading the label. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff must obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include resident behavior and needs, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, and emergency evacuation. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, personal care services, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
