An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, aid, and support to independent seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. The types of service offered often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some cases, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or respite. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . Connecticut has specific rules associated with this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, delegation of supervision of self-administered medications, nursing services, and disease prevention. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These include: assisted living philosophy, community policies and procedures, applicable regulations, and 10-hour orientation. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , verifying, and reminding residents to take medications.
