Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, personal care, and oversight to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often provide aid with transit and appointments, outings for recreational activity, and assistance with daily activities. In some cases, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Connecticut, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $58,560 . Connecticut has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying, medication administration , and opening medication packages. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These include: community policies and procedures, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, applicable regulations, and aides must pass a competency exam. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, and plan must include types and frequency of services needed. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health promotion, assistance with ADLs, nursing services, and medication administration.
