Southmayd Home was the ideal place for Mom when she began to require more help and supervision with daily activities. She started with Respite Stays and gradually transitioned to permanent residence. The transition was smooth with the help of caring and competent staff, their attention to detail and a comfortable family-oriented environment. For example, my mother had many specific food preferences…the dietary staff went out of their way to accommodate her with alternate meal choices. She enjoyed selected social activities but they respected her privacy when she preferred to stay in her own room to read or pray. Our family always felt welcome and were encouraged to visit at any time. All staff, from administration to aides and housekeeping, were sensitive to her needs and provided emotional support for all of us as needed. Southmayd Home is a hidden gem with clean and beautiful surroundings. We highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a safe and nurturing environment for Mom.... Read more

Southmayd Home for women has a certain charm. The common rooms are filled with character that gives a sense of being at home. The single bed rooms are of adequate sizes and are extremely comfortable. The walking garden path is outstanding. So too is the patio with tables and seating. Combined with the activities and other programs on offer, there maybe no other place that can compete with the intimacy and warmth provided by the those who make it all happen: the staff. This is a place where you will want your loved one to be.
The Southmayd Home is such a beautiful and unique community of women. The sense of history one feels when walking into the 100 year old structure is awe-inspiring. Likewise, my able tour guide, [date removed], shared the story of the foremothers of Southmayd, who raised the money to build the structure specifically to meet the needs of Waterbury's independent senior women. Don't want to overemphasize the age of the building; evidence of updates abound, from the installation of a new elevator to the up-to-the-minute flatscreen, through which residents access all kinds of entertainment and enrichment. If you're considering a place for a woman in your family, you'll definitely want to tour the Southmayd Home!
I highly recommend Southmayd Home for Women! Its a cozy, lovely, clean and friendly environment. It's lovely to see women sitting at the library reading and others doing arts and craft. Favorite part is the convenience of having only women residing there. Feels like home! Not to mention extremely affordable. I highly recommend.

My mother has been at the Southmayd Home for 9 years. She has dementia and was unable to live alone. At Southmayd she lives as independently as possible and is able to participate in activities with the community there. It is so much better than being isolated at home. She is happy at Southmayd and that makes us happy. Whenever I visit or call I know that everyone who works there knows my mother and is looking out for her welfare. The food is delicious, the building is so homey and welcoming- not an institutional feeling at all, and the grounds and plantings are extensive and beautifully maintained. As a girl, I went to school next door at the Kingsbury School. For every holiday throughout the year, students would bring special “favors” (little cups of candies that we decorated) for the ladies. I had a wonderful impression of Southmayd back then that continues to this day. There is the same warmth and caring that permeates Southmayd. My family and I are very grateful.
I am so very happy to have the Southmayd family caring for my aunt. She has been there for 5 years now and she really has come to love the place and the people. Also it is a safe enviorment for her. It is especially nice and a great comfort to know that there are wonderful people looking after her since I am no longer there several times a week to check on her. I recommend Southmayd to anyone who has a need for there services for their loved one.
Even demanding patients are given time and attention, all patients are treated with dignity.
My Mother-in-law was at Southmayd for almost five years. Wonderful activities, day trips, meals, volunteers came in with music, pets, etc. Well taken care of!
My Mom was a resident for about 8 years. The facility was homey, clean, comfortable. The staff was caring and friendly, so compassionate always recognizing the need for a feeling of independence. There were always activities and programs to keep the residents engaged. As a family we all enjoyed visiting my Mom and all the other residents. The staff knew all of us, and always kept us informed about Mom’s day to day care. Mom celebrated her 100th birthday there and the staff planned an awesome party for her complete with 100 roses, delicious food prepared by the staff, entertainment! Christmas was always special with decorations made by the residents, a festive family party,, a program put on by the residents.. One thing that always impressed me was the care taken with the laundry . My mother was very particular with her clothes and they washed and ironed her things just like she used to!
I had the pleasure of visiting Southmayd Home for Women and was so impressed by the overall atmosphere, its like one big, beautiful home. The residents were actively engaged and there was plenty to do, yummy food choices and both staff and residents seemed to all be very happy there. Southmayd Home for Women has some good solid longevity in key positions. A women only facility is quite unique and I think a fantastic idea for many. Families are welcome at anytime and they offer respite stay which is a nice way to ease a loved one into long-term care. [name removed] the outreach coordinator was so warm, welcoming and enthusiastic. She loves what she does, and it shows.
Had a great tour with [name removed]. She explained everything and even suggested a trial to see how my mom will adjust to the situation. She was very accommodating and even talking with some of the residents spontaneously was a pleasant experience.
I am a provider that is present in Southmayd multiple times per week to see clients. I am very impressed with the daily operations of the facility. Each resident is cared for like family while also encouraging a level of independence for residents that are used to being able to do most day to day tasks on their own. The staff is friendly and provides prompt care for each resident. There are daily activities that keep residents engaged, active, and social. I can't repeat it enough times, I am very impressed with Southmayd!
This community overall was nice the staff was friendly and helpful on the tour. It was nice and clean smelled good. However, I did not like the floor plan I felt mom may get a little confused and lost. The bathroom was not private it was outside The bedroom so that was a concern of privacy.
The caring people at Southmayd made my mother feel welcome and loved right away. The other ladies who live at Southmayd could not have been nicer. It feels like home. I am so blessed to have found it and would recommend it.
