Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What is assisted living?

Assisted living is long-term care for seniors who are generally active and independent, but who require increased supervision and help with some daily tasks. Staff can assist residents with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, and medication management. Assisted living is also a good option for seniors seeking more socialization. Services and amenities in assisted living facilities often include:

  • Housekeeping
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • Help with personal care
  • Laundry
  • Social activities and outings
  • 24-hour emergency response

Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized support. The types of service offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or nursing. The state of Texas maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and supervision of a resident’s medication regimen. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living, and general supervision or oversight. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: abuse/neglect, food and nutrition services, assisted living standards, and community resources. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, a comprehensive assessment , and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths.
