An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides support, assistance, and supervision to medically stable seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often provide help with transportation and appointments, care supervision, and outings for social activity. In some instances, communities may offer nursing, continuing care, or respite. Ohio has specific rules related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, cognitive status review, medication review, and functional status assessment. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These areas include job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, community procedures, and residents rights. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, reminders, and observation. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, medication administration, activities, and intermittent nursing services. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room.
