Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, assistance, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing care, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and nursing needs. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include abuse and neglect, assisted living concepts, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, and pain management. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, monitor dosage, and administer medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, recreational activities, limited nursing care, and social work services. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
