Assisted living communities administer personal care, social opportunities, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often include assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In some instances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services supervises this community type. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include emergency plans and procedures, abuse and neglect, residents rights, and caring for residents with impairment. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, nursing needs, routines and preferences, and plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, provide three meals a day, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, limited nursing care, pharmaceutical services, and assist with personal care.
