Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, assistance, and support to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include assisted living concepts, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, infection control/prevention, and caring for residents with impairment. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, administer medication, and monitor dosage. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, a health care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and nursing needs. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist with personal care, social work services, limited nursing care, and recreational activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, provide three meals a day, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents.
