Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individualized assistance. The services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In some instances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has specific rules related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: caring for residents with impairment, pain management, infection control/prevention, and emergency plans and procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, nursing needs, and a health care assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, social work services, limited nursing care, and recreational activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and provide three meals a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication.
