Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as personalized help. Services provided often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide nursing care, dementia care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: emergency plans and procedures, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, infection control/prevention, and caring for residents with impairment. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, pharmaceutical services, recreational activities, and assist with personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, monitor dosage, and administer medication. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, a health care assessment, a level of care assessment, and routines and preferences.
