Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and assistance for people who may require help with everyday activities such as cooking food or dressing. Assisted living communities commonly offer support with daily activities, help with transportation and appointments, and supervision of care. In certain situations, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: caring for residents with impairment, pain management, infection control/prevention, and emergency plans and procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, administer medication, and monitor dosage. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social work services, pharmaceutical services, assist with personal care, and limited nursing care. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, a health care assessment, routines and preferences, and a level of care assessment.
