An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, assistance, and supervision to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer chances for leisurely activity, help with the activities of daily life, and assistance with appointments and transportation. In select instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, pharmaceutical services, dietary services, and assist with personal care. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, provide three meals a day, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: assisted living concepts, infection control/prevention, pain management, and caring for residents with impairment. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, routines and preferences, and a level of care assessment.
