Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized assistance. Services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide hospice, respite, or dementia care. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, recreational activities, assist with personal care, and social work services. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These include: residents rights, caring for residents with impairment, assisted living concepts, and Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, a level of care assessment, routines and preferences, and plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states.
