Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and assistance for persons who might need help with things such as mobility or washing. Assisted living communities commonly offer outings for recreational activity, help with daily activities, and help with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: pain management, emergency plans and procedures, assisted living concepts, and residents rights. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, routines and preferences, and nursing needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, social work services, assist with personal care, and transportation.
